Washington DC Fastest Growing City For “Entrepreneurs”

Creative diversity is hanging in the balance in the US. No longer in the US will the Ivy league grad travel to Silicon Valley or Lower Manhattan to begin his or her career-life.  Instead, the blueprint of the US’s tomorrow tells of a grayer future. The beacon of “entrepreneurial growth” is not in vibrant metropolises like Los Angeles or Boston, but instead in Washington DC. For the same reason, Health care has put Salt Lake City on the map. Looking for a location to start your big venture? Look to the government, where “capital” never dries up…

According to a Kauffman study, Washington DC leads large metropolitan with the highest concentration of high-growth private companies.  Most of the private sector growth is being spurred by growing demand in government services, the largest of which being military and health care.

“The business of D.C. is government,” said Jim Chung, director of the office of entrepreneurship at George Washington University.

Sounds daunting.

Government is beginning to outsource everything, which means that everything we’ve been made to depend on them for will be offered to us through private companies.  For every police officer on the beat today, there are approximately 5 private security guards patrolling the US.

“The outsourcing trend is only going to accelerate, regardless of who is elected this November,” added Chung. .

“Outsourcing of government services has fed the huge complex of fast-growing companies in the D.C. area,” according to the Kaufman researchers.

And so, startup companies are storming the cities where government capital lasts compared to the wealth of the rest of the nation.

So, what the deconstruction of the US government (while simultaneously maintaining funding) has done is create an entire complex of companies, filled with employees, now dependent upon government, and in a very direct manner. The likelihood unfortunately is that it is very unlikely these companies would bite the hand that feeds.
