U.S. Sends Fighter Jets To Egypt Despite Political Unrest

Last week, the Muslim Brotherhood was overthrown by the Egyptian army. Morsi was thrown out of power.

Still, the US is continuing to evaluate these events. It is not yet clear to Washington if these events were merely a “coup.” The Muslim Brotherhood is currently demanding that Morsi be reinstated.
The US is not supposed to aid Egypt if Morsi’s removal was, indeed, a coup.

Nevertheless, as BBC News reports, the US is going ahead and delivering four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt.

There is currently massive unrest in Egypt. Muslim Brotherhood supporters have been taking part in large protests in Cairo. Over 50 of the protestors were killed by the Egyptian army on Monday.

Morsi’s exact location is not known, but according to a spokesman he is in a “safe place.”

The four fighter jets will be delivered to the country by US officials in the coming weeks. The four jets are only one part of a large order of 20 planes. Eight of them were sent to Egypt back in January.

Responding to questions from the press, White House mouthpiece Jay Carney said it would not be “in the best interests of the United States to make immediate changes to our assistance programs.”

We currently give Egypt millions in aid every year.

Obama has not yet described the events in Egypt as a “coup.”

Arrest warrants have been issued for 10 Muslim Brotherhood leaders for inciting the deadly violence that took place during Monday’s protests.

The Muslim Brotherhood tells a different story, however. They say the army started the conflict when they open fired on peaceful protestors. The military claims self defense.

The warrants seem to have only made Muslim Brotherhood supporters more angry and determined to get Morsi back in power.

A new election is supposed to take place in Egypt, and its timetable will be announced in the next two weeks.

The Muslim Brotherhood is furious, since Morsi was voted in democratically in the first place. They could potentially delay plans for a new election, and complicate the process.

It seems insane that we are sending aid and fighter jets to Egypt while it is in its current condition. What are your thoughts? Let us know below.
