Does the Mayan calendar end date of 21 December, 2012 represent a doomsday scenario culminating in the end of the world? Not in this author's opinion and here is why.
The Mayan culture based many of their beliefs on
advanced astrology and mathematics, which included a system of
calendars that are more precise than our current Gregorian calendar.
The Long Count is a period of 5,125 years that ends on December 21,
2012. In total, the Long Count consists of approximately 260 twenty
year units. On December 21, 2012, the earth will complete a wobble on
its axis, known as precession
The Mayans, Time and Cosmology
Time,
to us, is something lineal that is measured by a day unit, which is
the length of time it takes for the Earth to spin one time on its axis.
It takes the Earth 365.25 days to complete an orbit around the Sun.
Every fourth year, we have a leap year, which makes up for the .25
accumulated in the previous 3 years. From our Gregorian model, we can
assume the winter equinox will occur on December 21st and the summer
equinox will occur on June 21st.
For the Mayans, the position of the Sun determined
the solstices, equinoxes and new years. The pyramid of Kukulcan at
Chichen-Itza in Mexico is an excellent example of how well the Mayans
kept time.
On 12/21/2012, the winter solstice precesses through the Milky Way, which was of great mythological importance to the Mayans.
Doomsday or not?
This is the point where conflicting “opinions” have segregated the two polar views of the Mayan calendar and Mayan prophecies.
Unfortunately, there are too many "Doomsday" and
"Apocalyptic" 2012 websites that are flooding the internet with a
cataclysmic view of 2012. All one needs to do is to study and research
the Mayan culture and calendar(s) to find out what the true
interpretation of the Mayan prophecies are to know this is not a day
of cataclysm.
I am the webmaster of one of the few websites that
presents 2012 in a positive light and I am truly amazed at how many
panic-stricken people there are regarding the Mayan calendar end date
of 12-21-2012. Some people have gone to various extremes of buying
bunkers to live in, purchasing guns and ammunition for safety and
security reasons and stockpiling up on food and water.
Simply stated, the Mayan "prophecies" are based on
the Popol Vuh, which is the Mayan Creation Myth story and the books of
the Chilam Balam. Neither the Popol Vuh nor the books of the Chilam
Balam state 2012 will be a cataclysmic day.
A Mayan's Perspective
Recently, I interviewed 2012 luminary John Major
Jenkins (author of Maya Cosmogenesis 2012, Tzolkin, Pyramid of Fire
and Galactic Alignment) and asked him about the Mayan prophecies.
"The one and only true 2012 prophecy that I perceive is the one that exists in the Maya Creation Myth (the Popol Vuh), which is reinforced by the astral theology encoded onto the carved monuments at Izapa – the place that invented the 2012 calendar," stated Jenkins. "If this is the prophecy you are referring to, the first part of it has already come to pass. It has to do with the self serving egoism (Seven Macaw) controlling and deceiving people at the end of the cycle. The second part of the prophecy is indeterminate and will be experienced differently for each individual, as it involves the challenges of placing ego back into right relationship with the true eternal self (One Hunahpu), through sacrificing the illusions installed by ego. The second part of the prophecy is indeterminate, and not definitive in some kind of predetermined vision of a fated future, because free will exists."
The date on the Mayan calendar is represented as
13.0.0.0.0, which is the end of the13 baktun period, or one “Great
Cycle”. Jenkins firmly believes the Mayan calendar will start over on
the following day, represented as 0.0.0.0.1. “Waiting for 2012 is like
waiting for a bus, and not realizing that you are the bus,” Jenkins
added, “The experience of Now, of the eternal present, is not located
on a calendar.”
I
recently visited the Mayan ruins in Tulum and spoke with a Mayan
gentleman by the name of Beto who stated, “The last and current lines of
humans were made from corn because humans, like corn, will come from
the dirt and follow a similar cycle. Corn begins with a seed in the
dirt, becomes a corn stalk and eventually food. At this point, the
corn stalk dies and goes back into the dirt as the cycle continues
once again. The cycle of planting corn is every 260 days, the same as
human gestation.”
According to Beto, "When katun 20 comes
(12/21/2012), the people of corn will no longer be humans". I asked
Beto to elaborate further on this statement to which he replied,
"Something bigger will happen to change our perspective of life."
We're currently on the Mayan's fifth Sun. The First
Sun was destroyed by water, the second by fire, the third by
hurricanes and the fourth by natural catastrophes. On this current
sun, we are called the "People of Corn".
2012: DNA Upgrade?
Through
conjecture, one could surmise that 12-21-12 will also end in
catastrophe but there is no indication that this will occur.
There are some interesting points behind the Mayan calendar end date. On 12/21/2012,
the sun, Earth and the center of the Milky Way Galaxy align in an
event that happens only once every 26,000 years or so. It's amazing to
think how the Mayans knew this over 3,000 years ago.
If you look at the lineage of man, "somehow" we
went from homo erectus to homo habilis to homo sapien without any
gradual change between lineages. In other words, we had a DNA upgrade in each scenario. Will this pattern continue in 2012?
Through "The Secret" we've already learned how to
tap into the 5th dimension by having thoughts equal manifestations.
There is still work and effort needed for our thoughts to become
manifestations at this point in time.
What will happen on 12-21-2012?
Here are the possible scenarios for 2012.
1. 2012 is a cataclysmic event. In this scenario,
there would be martial law imposed on us, total chaos, a lack of
medical attention, the possibility of no electricity or clean water,
etc... For those who survive this "cataclysmic" event, what would the
quality of life be like? Dismal at best.
2. 2012 happens and we receivea DNA upgrade. In
other words, your thoughts will equal manifestations. That sounds
great. You could manifest a cold beverage by just thinking about it!
That could also create "Hell on Earth". Imagine the person who lives
in fear or constantly has negative thoughts. For example, let's
imagine someone constantly thinks someone may shoot him on any given
day, so he packs a gun when he leaves the house. If thoughts become
manifestations, every time he thinks someone might shoot him, then guess
what? They will be!
3. Nothing happens and we all have a good laugh.
Chances are scenario three is most likely where
nothing happens, yet the 2012 mania is incredibly similar to the
negative sensationalism we see on the 6 o'clock news regarding how
2012 is presented as a cataclysmic event.
What can I do now?
There are certain precautions one should consider,
such as whether or not to live near a major fault line or coastline
and stockpiling enough food and supplies, just in case.
The simplest everday answer is to live your life as
if scenario two were to happen. All that takes is being one with
yourself and the world, along with thinking positive thoughts and
doing good deeds for others. Live for TODAY! Live for the NOW! If
nothing happens, then you've helped to make this world a better place
and you've probably gained a lot in the world of spirituality.
Life is about making choices. The best choices are
made after fully researching an issue and making a sound and
responsible decision based on fact and sensibility, not hysteria.
Somewhere in between, there's a happy medium!
