The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the
movies that will vie for the coveted Academy Award for Best Foreign
Language Film. The Russian submission 'White Tiger' did not make the
shortlist for the prize.
A total of 71 films from around the world were submitted for consideration, which the Academy then narrowed down to a shortlist of nine films.
The shortlist includes 'Amour, 'a co-production from Germany, Austria and France; 'A Royal Affair' from Sweden; 'Intouchables' from France, 'Kon-Tiki,' a co-production from Denmark, Britain and Norway; 'War Witch' from Canada; 'No' from Chile; 'Beyond the Hills' from Romania; 'Deep' from Iceland; and 'Sister' from Switzerland.
The 2012 film 'White Tiger' by Russian-Armenian filmmaker Karen Shakhnazarov did not make the shortlist. The movie's plot chronicles ruthless tank combat during World War II.
Before January 6, a special Oscar commission will select five films out of the shortlist as the final contestants for Best Foreign Language Film.
